Where have we seen the entertainment industry change from patriarchal to more inclusive? How can it be better and progress further in the future?

  • Strong female character

    • Notable characters in Syfy’s list of greatest Strong Female Characters

      • Wonder Woman, Wynonna Earp, Arya Stark, Dana Scully, Hermione Granger, Moana, Buffy Summers, Peggy Carter

    • What does she look like?

      • Typically white, cis, straight, thin/lean/muscular, sexually appealing, also likable.

        • Likability tends to sway audience approval of what makes a Strong Female Character.

    • Stock character, as much a trope as Cool Girl

    • “Anomalous”; like she’s not like other female characters

    • We think: headstrong, independent, feisty, action-packed

    • Why is this only limited to a specific type of woman? Isn’t it possible that there are different forms of strength? And why must we label and categorize who and who isn’t a Strong Female Character?

      • Don’t we do a disservice when we continue to promote modern female characters as Strong Female Characters?

      • Why do women have to be Strong to be taken seriously?

    • It was meant as a way to take female characters seriously. Acknowledging that a show has well-developed female characters shouldn’t be seen as revolutionary.
